Around Manaslu/Larke Pass Trek

Manaslu is a region visited by very few trekkers since it was open to trekkers only in 1991. This trek around Manaslu takes you from the low hills to the upper Buri Gandaki valley and crosses the Larkya La pass (5160m) to the Marsyangdi valley.

 

Manaslu (8163m) is the eighth-highest mountain in the world. Manaslu is categorized as a “controlled area” so trekkers need special permits through government-registered trekking agencies like us, Koseli Adventure Pvt. Ltd. This trek is one of the most adventurous and challenging trekking trails in Nepal.

 

People such as Gurungs, Tsum, and Nubri Bhotia people are living here and have closer geographical and cultural ties with Tibet and Nepal. In Namrung village, there is an ancient Tibetan royal palace dating back to the 16th century, 18th century The great Nepali king won this part of the territory of Tibet so now in Nepal. This is a secret Buddhist world with monasteries, mani walls, and prayer flags.

 

Larke Pass (5106m), the highest elevation during this trek offers a mind-blowing panoramas view of Manaslu (8163m), Himalchuli (7893m), Himlung (7126m), and Cheo Himal (6820m).

DETAIL ITINERARY:

Day 01: ARRIVAL AT KATHMANDU +

Our guide will be waiting with our office name board "KOSELI ADVENTURE PVT.LTD" at TIA, welcome you with the garland of flowers and transfer to Hotel. According to your arrival time, our guide takes you to visit Kathmandu's Old Bazaars "Asan and Indrachowk" where Nepali people buy everything they need for their daily life. You will also see several Pagoda Temples during this visit. Then take you to Kathmandu's First Touristic place "Thamel" by rickshaw (three wheels cycle) where you can buy your trekking necessities and also exchange money or taste organic Himalayan coffee. Back to the Hotel.

Day 02: KATHMANDU — SOTIKHOLA (700M) — MACCHAKHOLA +

 

We leave by bus towards Pokhara. The road offers great views of the Trisuli River Valley, but shortly after the road turns away from it, we turn north through beautiful tropical scenery. At Arughat Bazaar we change vehicles. We go up the course of the Burhi Gandaki, through fields and rice paddies, to Macchakola, passing through the villages of Arkhet, and Lapubesi.

Day 03: MACHHAKHOLA - JAGAT +

 

We continue our progress along the river to Kanigaon and Khola Bensi, with at times beautiful views of the peaks of Ganesh Himal and the Machha Khola valley. We reach Tatopani fairly quickly, on the same bank of the river, where there is a hot spring, then we cross the Budi Gandaki by a suspension bridge to reach Dobhan (1,300 m). The Budi Gandaki valley then narrows before arriving at Jagat.

Day 04: JAGAT - DENG +

 

We evolve on a balcony path, sometimes above the river. We cross several villages including that of Philim. Himalayan pines adorn the trail. We change banks several times and the gorges tighten. We arrive at Deng, a village of Tibetan culture with the first Buddhist temple and chortens.

Day 05: DENG - NAMRUNG +

 

We cross the region of Kutang, populated by Gurung practicing Buddhism. Many villages and landscapes punctuate the day: pine and bamboo forest, rivers, torrents, villages of Rana, Ghap, and Bihi before reaching the beautiful stone houses of Namrung.

Day 06: NAMRUNG - SHYALA +

 

Always along the Budi Gandaki, we cross many villages inhabited by the Bhotias, of Tibetan origin, notably those of Bengsam, Lihi, Sho, and Lho. After Sho, the view emerges from the summit of Manaslu (8,163 m) and we are dominated by Himalchuli (7,893 m) and Ngadi Chuli. We also have a beautiful view of the Ganesh Himal. We visit Lho Monastery before continuing to Shyala.

Day 07: SHYALA - PUNG GYEN GLACIER - SAMAGAON +

 

From Shyala we head towards Sama then we branch off towards the old monastery of Pung Gyen at 3,870 meters above sea level. This stage is a little-used variant of the Manaslu tour and allows us to perfect our acclimatization. We are in a wild environment between a rock and grassy plateaus. The panorama is exceptional and we admire the Manaslu which is getting closer to us every day. We are not far from the glaciers and the chortens and mani walls remind us of a human presence from a not-so-distant time. We retrace our steps to take the "classic" path and go to the village of Sama.

Day 08: SAMAGAON(OPTION MANASLU BASE CAMP) +

 

Acclimatization day. We visit the superb Tibetan village of Samagaon, the monastery, and the cells of the nuns, and we make a short detour to Lake Birendra Kund (3,570 m) located at the foot of Manaslu. For the fittest and best acclimatization, it is possible to climb to the base camp of Manaslu at 4,850 meters (+1,350 m, -1,350 m, and about 10 hours of walking), for this you will have to leave very early in the morning and plan a picnic.

Day 09: SAMAGAON - SAMDO +

 

We continue our progress towards the long Mani wall of Kermo Manan and the village of Samdo (3,780 m) located very close to the Tibetan border, not far from the confluence of the Sama Chu with the Budhi Gandaki, and which is home to a community of Tibetan refugees. A caravan trail joins Tibet by the Lajyung pass (5,096 m).

Day 10: SAMDO - DHARMASALA +

 

Altitude acclimatization day. It is possible to discover the surroundings of Samdo before continuing our progress toward Dharamsala. A stone hut only. The highest camp of the trip, the night will be cold.

Day 11: DHARMASALA - LARKE PASS (5160M) - BIMTANG +

 

Departure early in the morning, going up the course of the Larke Khola. The progression is easy at first, then becomes much steeper at the end of the ascent of the Larkya pass, the altitude of which varies quite significantly depending on the sources, from 4,910 m to 5,220 m. In any case, we have a great view of Tibet border peaks such as Cheo (6,812m), Nemjung (7,140m) and Himlung (7,126m), as well as Kang Guru (7,010m), Gyaji Kang (7,036 m) and even Annapurna II (7,937 m). On the other side of the pass, we often descend on snow, then scree, to reach Larcia, then Tabuche, and the glacial valley of Bimtang, from where we can see the west face of Manaslu.

Day 12: BIMTANG - TILJE +

 

We descend the valley of the Dudh Khola river to the village of Tilije, inhabited by the Gurung ethnic group. We still cross mountain pasture hamlets, then find wooded areas and the first villages.

Final altitude: about 2250 m

Day 13: TILJE - POKHARA +

 

We descend and cross more alpine hamlets, then find wooded areas and the village of Dharapani. Then, depart by jeep on the track for 3 hours until Besi Sahar then by bus, which will take us to Pokhara in about 5 hours by road.

Day 14: POKHARA +

 

Free day in Pokhara. Safety day can also be used during the very in case of bad weather to cross the Larkye pass for example.

Day 15: BACT TO KATHMANDU +

We get back to Kathmandu by drive or by flight.
